Matthew Rauscher - Master of Fine Art
Matthew Rauscher recently returned to northern New York state with a freshly earned Master of Fine Arts degree and an "extreme sense of the density of the human condition." An interdisciplinary artist at heart, Matthew's thesis work focused on an examination of the relationships we make with our possessions. Rauscher makes use of a wide range of media to produce his art, the style of which he describes as: surreal/postmodern/conceptual/abstract/
formal/figurative/other/none/etc.

The universe around us is an ever changing, swirling chaotic expanse. As humans we are constantly trying to force order onto this world. We have built houses, plotted the land off for farming, added roads, buildings, skyscrapers, and even space stations. We also order our actions with laws and religions. We place order into everything around us by assigning names and definitions. Eventually though, I think the universe will win out. Our ordered fantasy will be taken by the overwhelming chaos of existence.

My art is simultaneously a comment on my environment and culture as well as an adventurous journey. In an attempt to express my opinions about the world I focus on a few important themes in the conceptualization of my art. These themes are classification, simulation, destruction, dynamism and the absurd. As a result of this, the form of my art often possesses a sense of intricacy and complexity, as well as a strong bias toward humor. It is my belief that humans exist most purely when they are laughing. I consider the process I use to create works of art to be a ruthless attack upon the materials of this world, forcing them to submit to the desires of my will.
